The University of South Alabama’s department of Microbiology is seeking to hire a Research Technologist III. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Essential Functions


These are the job duties required of the position.


Essential Functions
  • Plans experimental protocols and independently carries out a research program.
  • Independently designs and implements research techniques including conducting content analysis involving the extraction and compounding of solutions to identify the physical, biological and chemical characteristics and property changes in laboratory samples.
  • Collects and analyses resulting data using quantitative and qualitative techniques and draws conclusions as related to the research project.
  • Prepares data for grant proposal submissions and for posters and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Supervises lower level technical positions in carrying out research experiments.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator in developing research papers.
  • Performs very technical and highly complex research studies.
  • Coordinates studies with high throughput capacities involved in generation of genetic mutants in Eukaryotic cells using the CRISPR/Cas9 gene engineering technology.
  • Performs techniques requisite to molecular biology such as PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, cloning, nucleic acid purification, Western blots, protein assays, immune-based assays (e.g., ELISA).
  • Oversees and maintains the operation of a research laboratory to include ensuring record keeping requirements for all compliance issues, emergency response plans, biohazardous waste disposal and unhazardous waste disposal and maintaining laboratory inventories and ordering supplies.
  • Follows appropriate animal handling procedures for small rodents to include management of genetic breeding colonies and genotyping and performs minor surgical procedures.
  • Working with biohazardous materials (BSL-2) and radioisotopes.
  • Trains Laboratory Assistants and technicians in all aspects for working in a Biohazard Level-2 Laboratory.
  • Participates in on-going clinical studies involving processing and archiving of human patient (de-identified) samples and data.
  • Utilizes a PC to analyze data using appropriate spread sheet (Excel) and statistical (GraphPad Prism) programs, and performing advanced Internet literature searches.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
