Position Highlights

We are looking for a scientist to join a team developing a new MICADAS Accelerator Mass Spectrometry and stable isotope facility (The TIME Lab) at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. Our aim is to be a leading research facility for these combined applications, offering both training and research opportunities. The main role will be to ensure high throughput and high-quality preparation of a range of sample types (primarily tree-rings, but also annually laminated marine samples, archaeological materials etc.) in a collaborative laboratory environment. This will involve training and supervision of student workers as well as the development, improvement and implementation of standard operating procedures. The role will also include assisting as required in the operation and maintenance of research instrumentation and involvement in reporting, publications and research project development.

This position has a starting salary of $59,404.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Sample preparation of a range of sample types for radiocarbon and stable isotope analysis.
  • Supervision of students carrying out basic laboratory procedures.
  • Assisting with operations and maintenance of the MICADAS Accelerator Mass Spectrometer, auxiliary equipment, and LA-IRMS instrumentation. 
  • Management of sample throughput, data analysis, trouble-shooting, protocol improvement, participation in research activities, writing and research for publications and presentations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors in chemistry, ion beam physics or related disciplines, experience in radiocarbon sample preparation and / or with LA-IRMS instrumentation (or similar) would also be an advantage.
