Research Technologist I - Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (Ocular Immunology and Angiogenesis Lab)

Position Description:

Purpose

The Ocular Immunology and Angiogenesis Lab in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking a Research Technologist I to use a variety of cellular, molecular, biochemical, and imaging in vitro and in vivo rodents and porcine model systems to study basic and translational research in the fields of ocular fibrotic and angiogenic diseases, including diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Under general supervision, support research through projects, animal maintenance and communication of data, and execution of laboratory experiments. 

Primary Functions

  • Conduct experimental designs for sponsored research projects, routine experiments and animal work.
  • Management of colony, breeding, weaning, and genotyping animals.
  • Assist with ocular imaging of animals.
  • Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.
  • Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays.
  • Participate in meetings with the Principal Investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret data validity as needed.
  • Oversee daily lab operations in the absence of the supervisor or principal investigator.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks, document experiments, troubleshoot and optimize laboratory protocols.
  • Order lab supplies and assist with everyday lab needs, including equipment maintenance.
  • Must have strong analytical, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Prepare media and maintain cells by various culturing techniques.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

The candidate must have a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the eye. Understanding of ocular disease; proficiency in ocular imaging and ocular emergencies is a plus. General knowledge of cellular and molecular biology techniques and working in a research laboratory.
