Position Summary

The Madzima lab in the Department of Plant Biology (College of Agriculture and Natural Resources) at MSU is seeking to hire a full-time Research Technologist I. The Research Technologist will assist research in plant molecular biology, genetics and genomics research. We use field, greenhouse and lab-based approaches to understand how epigenetic mechanisms facilitate growth, development, and response to abiotic stress stimuli in crop plants.

The Research Technologist will perform standard molecular biology techniques to support ongoing research in the Madzima lab. The Technician will also be responsible for managing growth chamber, greenhouse and field experiments, primarily using maize and maintain detailed and organized documentation of laboratory, field and greenhouse procedures. The Research Technologist will order and maintain an organized inventory of laboratory, field and greenhouse supplies and reagents and perform routine lab safety protocols.

In this position, the Research Technologist will have ample opportunity to prepare scientific results for publication and presentation. Accordingly, this position could be viewed as a stepping-stone toward gaining entry into graduate programs in the Biological Sciences or related field.


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the Biological Sciences or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in plant research techniques or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in the Biological Sciences or closely related field (e.g., biochemistry).
At least 1 year of research experience in a biochemistry or molecular biology (or closely related) laboratory.
Upper-level coursework in either molecular biology, genetics or biochemistry.
Must be proficient in basic molecular techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis.
Experience working in field and greenhouse settings.
Experience working and managing field and greenhouse experiments.

Experience working statistical software.
Must have a demonstrated ability to work and problem-solve independently.
Good organizational skills.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Must be able to keep track of many details simultaneously while following lab procedures.
Good interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with other researchers of diverse identities and backgrounds.

The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification, travel, fieldwork, and/or lifting up to 25 lbs.
