Position Description:

Purpose

Under general supervision provide support for department research through projects, maintenance and communication of data, and execution of laboratory experiments related to Spinal Cord Injury.

Primary Functions

  •   Carry out spinal cord injury surgeries and neurobehavioral testing in small animal injury model. 

  •   Assist with animal care, including animal husbandry, drug preparation and administration, and euthanasia.

  •   Perform fixation and dissection techniques. Prepare tissue for histological analysis. Cut tissue and prepare slides for microscopic analysis.  

  •   Assist with analysis of neurobehavioral assessments and microscopic imaging.

  •   Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.

  •   Schedule and coordinate with other lab groups and imaging core facility members.

  •   Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data.

  •   Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.

  •   Carry out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.

  •   Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research.

  •   Oversee daily lab operation in the absence of the supervisor or Principal Investigator.

•   Other laboratory tasks as assigned by supervisor or Principal Investigator.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

Knowledge of biology, physiology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.

Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education:               Bachelor’s degree

Minimum Required Experience:              No experience required

Preferred Education:                              Bachelor’s degree in a life science field such as biology or neuroscience

Preferred Experience:                            Prior work in a research setting including experience working with animals and exposure to electrophysiology

Preferred Field:                                     Basic Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Physiology, or Neuroscience related field.
