UW Tacoma's Center For Urban Waters' Puget Sound Institute (PSI) has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Technologist 2.

Project Objectives

Assess the effectiveness of shoreline restoration projects for biological endpoints in subtidal habitats. Quantify impacts of armor removal on subtidal habitat structure and fish use.

Detailed Activities

This position will help conduct field and lab experiments related to the recovery of the Puget Sound ecosystem. Our new field technician will help lead the field project, including managing and conducting habitat surveys and surveys of fish abundance, distribution, and growth across variable habitat quality. The technician will manage boat-based field activities, to include: scheduling field days, ordering and preparing field equipment and supplies, conducting seine sampling and other boat-based data collection. This position will also help coordinate or conduct laboratory work including analysis of growth factor hormones in captured fish. The position will also conduct literature review and data entry. There is potential for increased responsibility and tenure in the position, depending on qualifications and pending additional funding. Activities will include but not be limited to the specific details outlined below.

Field Project

• Impacts of armor removal on subtidal habitat and species use
o Sample armored and reference (natural) sites at various locations along open shorelines
o Bi-weekly surveys May – August 2023
o Collect observational information about species use
- Lampara seine sampling of pelagic fish
o Collect observational information about habitat characteristics
- Collect water quality information via CTD and Secchi disk
- Conduct visual predator surveys

Analyses

• Regional impacts of shoreline habitat quality on species use of nearshore habitats
o Oversee data entry and QC/QA.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science, PLUS one year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I OR one year of full-time post-baccalaureate college in an appropriate field of science or technology. Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree.
