The UW's Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology's Maternal Fetal Medicine research division has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Technologist 1.

OVERVIEW

The Maternal Fetal Medicine research division is a vibrant group at the University of Washington conducting research on several topics including infectious diseases, maternal immunizations, and preeclampsia. The applicant will work mostly with Dr. Kachikis, Dr. Shree, and Dr. McCartney, but there are opportunities to work with other perinatal researchers in our division. Dr. Kachikis’ research focuses on infections and vaccines in pregnancy. Dr. Shree works primarily on understanding the reproductive origins of adult disease, specifically cardiovascular disease after preeclampsia. Dr. McCartney’s work focuses on immunology in the maternal-fetal placental interface.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary role is to support the investigator’s research programs with respect to specimen processing and storage. This involves processing blood for serum, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) isolation, and placental samples. The individual will also maintain sample inventory, which may involve transferring data to a new inventory system, assist with DNA extractions and quantitative PCR and other immunological assays. Depending on experience and interest, this individual will have the opportunity to develop SOPs, oversee student work in the laboratory, and may be involved with more patient facing activities as well such as participant recruitment and enrollment. We plan to involve this technician in academic opportunities, including naming on abstracts and publications as appropriate.

REQUIRED

Two years’ experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED

Preference for an individual in the biomedical field (Biology, Biochemistry, etc.) with comfort working in laboratory space. Prior research lab experience is ideal. We are looking for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, hard-working, reliable, and takes initiative – and optimally who would be interested in contributing and benefitting from scientific abstracts and publications.
