Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Learning how people can eat uniquely!
The UNC Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) is an internationally recognized center conducting innovative basic and translational science to establish how individual differences in nutrient requirements and responses to diet affect our nutritional needs. Our research contributes to the prevention and mitigation of chronic disease across the lifespan from periconception through aging.
Our Mission is to lead precision nutrition research through understanding how genetics and environment affect an individual’s requirements for and responses to nutrients.
NRI principal investigators hold faculty appointments in the departments of Nutrition and Psychology at UNC Chapel Hill. Their research interrogates nutrient roles in disease prevention, disease risk factors, and the impact of gene-environment and gene-nutrient interactions.
The NRI promotes excellence in nutrition knowledge, teaching, and research. We seek and encourage a diversity of experiences and ideas and provide the tools and flexibility for all employees to achieve success and excellence within their chosen occupations and aspirations.
We are committed to open dialogue, careful listening, becoming educated about the systems that hinder or prevent success, and taking action to ensure that all are equally acknowledged for their contributions and equally reap the benefits of being part of our community.
Our Vision is to use scientific discovery to ensure optimal health through individualized nutrition.
Everyone who works at the NRI supports this hopeful vision. Working at the NRI means doing good for the world. Join us!

Position Summary
The Sergey Krupenko Lab in the Nutrition Research Institute is seeking a Research Technician to assist with animal studies, biochemistry, and cell and molecular biology experiments, including mouse colony maintaining, cloning, polymerase chain reaction-based techniques, immunohistochemistry (sectioning samples of tissue for histology), followed by image analyses and cell culture techniques.
The Technician will work in the area of nutrition and metabolic diseases, with the focus on liver function and cancer biology. The position will set up studies then collect, process, and analyze various biological samples using molecular biology techniques and biochemical assays. The Technician will follow established standard operating procedures and may make modifications to procedures as needed after such modifications have been approved by supervisor. The Technician will work with some independence as part of a comprehensive research team that is involved in basic science and translational research studies.
The Technician will maintain mouse colonies, perform animal studies, and perform biochemical, cellular, and molecular biology assays. The Technician will maintain proper documentation of mouse colonies and experimental procedures and reports, use Excel spreadsheets, prepare written reports, and work independently in these capacities. After an initial training period, the Technician should be able to take a general outline, develop and follow a detailed standard operating procedure with minimal supervision, perform the experiment or assay, gather reliable data, prepare a focused report of the results, and present to the lab research group. The Technician should be able to instruct others (e.g., coworkers, students) in the techniques used and to occasionally supervise less experienced personnel.
Specific techniques to be performed may include, but are not limited to: DNA, RNA, and protein isolation; real-time PCR; gel electrophoresis, Western blots, immunohistochemistry, cell culture experiments; animal studies of nutrition. The Technician will be expected to learn new techniques as needed and support the scientific needs of several senior research personnel.
