Description of Work

The Research Technician will assist the UNC Cystic Fibrosis Tissue Procurement and Cell Culture Core. The primary responsibility of the research technician will be to prepare large lots of custom cell culture media on a weekly basis. Applicant must also conduct quality control on all prepared media. Other duties in media preparation include, cleaning and autoclaving glassware, preparing complex additives for the custom media and shipment of custom media. Other duties include a variety of tissue culture procedures, such as dissecting tissues, isolating cells, counting and distributing cells and maintaining primary cell cultures. Applicant should be proficient in performing computer data entry and have data base organization skills. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential. Applicant must have the ability to follow detailed protocols precisely and have general knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment and terminology. Must have the ability to operate and care for lab equipment such as the incubators, biological cabinets, autoclaves, freezers, stir plate, pH meters, weigh scales, microscopes and centrifuges. Ability to understand and carryout oral and written instructions. Ability to work independently, take the initiative and multitask. Other responsibilities include supporting staff with additional work load which can entail sterile tissue culture duties, preparing basic reagents and solutions, and restocking the lab on a daily basis. Must be able to prioritize, manage tasks, and handle a variety of demands and have excellent organizational skills, keen attentions to details and self-review of work for accuracy and completeness. Duration: Minimum of 1 year, 30-40 hrs per week.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work required.

B.A./B.S. in Biological Science degree and/or one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

Ability to lift 50 lbs, Valid NC Driver’s License
