Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) resulted from the merger of the departments of Marine Sciences, Geological Sciences, and the Institute of Marine Sciences. This consolidation represents an opportunity to build a nationally prominent earth and marine sciences department and coastal marine lab. The natural synergy of the earth and ocean sciences at Carolina brings strength, stability, and visibility to the combined program. UNC-Chapel Hill is taking advantage of the natural connections between these programs and the combined strengths of faculty, students and staff to increase multidisciplinary and emerging research, develop degree programs to better serve students, and enhance engagement with North Carolina coastal communities. Position Summary
This Research Technician fills the need for technical support for several research projects related to harmful algal blooms and water quality in eastern North Carolina. The technician will spend about half time doing field work within eastern North Carolina and the other half working in the laboratory. Travel to Lake Mattamuskeet in Hyde County, NC and the Cape Fear River near Raleigh and Wilmington, NC is expected. A valid driver license is required and the ability to trailer and drive a boat is preferred. Operating and trailering a small boat will be part of this job. Field work days will be long but with beautiful scenery, snacks, and good company. The person in this position will make water quality measurements in both the field and lab using several different water quality instruments. Previous experience conducting water quality analyses is beneficial but not required. This person will need to enter and maintain data records in Excel spreadsheets. A working knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Word are required. 11 months with possibility to extend depending upon job performance and availability of funds.

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to work in occasionally harsh field conditions (hot, humid, cold, windy etc.), ability to lift 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation, ability to operate and trailer a small vessel. Work Location is Morehead City, NC.
