Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) resulted from the merger of the departments of Marine Sciences, Geological Sciences, and the Institute of Marine Sciences. This consolidation represents an opportunity to build a nationally prominent earth and marine sciences department and coastal marine lab. The natural synergy of the earth and ocean sciences at Carolina brings strength, stability, and visibility to the combined program. UNC Chapel Hill is taking advantage of the natural connections between these programs and the combined strengths of faculty, students and staff to increase multidisciplinary and emerging research, develop degree programs to better serve students, and enhance engagement with North Carolina coastal communities. Position Summary
We are a plankton ecophysiology and genomics group in the UNC Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences Department seeking to fill a laboratory manager/research scientist position. Various tasks include culturing of phytoplankton using trace metal clean techniques, elemental composition analysis of biological samples, cellular physiology, analyses of large sequence datasets, and phylogenetic analysis of functional genes.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Minimum requirements include marine sciences, oceanography, microbiology, biochemistry or environmental sciences and some research experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Desired skills include experience with cell (preferably algal) culturing, chemical, physiological and molecular approaches and bioinformatic skills.
