Position Overview

A full-time lab/field research technician position is available to support research in the ecology and evolution of plant-microbiome interactions at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS). The research technician will be responsible for maintaining projects associated with field experiments, greenhouse and/or growth chamber experiments characterizing plant traits (particularly root traits), plant-microbiome interactions and their influence on plant adaptation, plant species coexistence, plant community structure and productivity, and/or soil ecosphere development. A successful candidate will be extremely organized and efficient with time management.

This position works on-site but occasional remote work may be considered per mutual agreement between the department and selected candidate.


Job Description

60% - Supervising, monitoring, and executing plant-microbiome experiments (in the greenhouse, growth chambers, and/or field) including set up, maintenance, harvesting, data entry and analysis

20% - Maintaining equipment and supply inventories, including ordering repairs and replacements as needed

20% - Entering or supervising entry of results into databases and maintaining data from experiments


Position Requirements

  • Work in greenhouse and in field conditions (extreme environmental conditions of heat, cold, wind, etc.).
  • Lift up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation.
  • This position works on-site but occasional remote work may be considered per mutual agreement between the department and selected candidate.

  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, botany, ecology, agronomy, range science, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in field research as a field worker, field/lab technician, or investigator.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plant identification through experience and/or education.
  • Prior experience using a microscope and other sensitive laboratory equipment through education or experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge through education or experience with sterile technique.
  • Experience in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office).
  • Proficient written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology, botany, ecology, agronomy, range science or related field.
  • Working knowledge of Midwestern and/or Great Plains flora, specifically tallgrass prairie species.
  • Experience propagating plants from seed.
  • Experience in database management.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience managing people.
