About the Department
 

A Research Technician position is available in the laboratory of Shannon Elf, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago in the Ben May Department for Cancer Research. Our laboratory investigates the biology and targeted therapy of myeloid blood cancers, particularly myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary
 

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.
The successful applicant will work primarily with graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows in the lab conducting biochemistry, molecular biology, cell culture, and animal studies. Additionally, the applicant will provide support to the lab, including obtaining reagents, preparing samples, and organizing data.

Responsibilities

  • Performs molecular biology and biochemical experiments with increasing independence.

  • Maintains and performs experiments with cell lines in tissue culture.

  • Pre-clinical rodent work (mice).

  • Records data and analyzes results using basic statistics.

  • Prepares laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and maintains equipment.

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe lab environment.

  • Acts as biosafety liaison for the lab, coordinates lab safety training and inspections.

  • Helps to prepare presentations and written articles for publication.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree with significant biological/biochemical science coursework.

 

Experience:

  • Experience with techniques in molecular biology and biochemistry.

Working Conditions

  • Laboratory environment: occasionally works with radioactive isotopes, toxic chemicals, biohazards and substances emitting unpleasant odors.  

  • Working with mice.
