The Department of Pathology has a long and rich history of excellence in clinical service, training, and research. Our physicians and scientists are experts in a variety of subspecialties in anatomic pathology, laboratory medicine, genomics and molecular pathology, investigational pathology, and immunology. Our diverse faculty study and diagnose patient disease and medical conditions using state-of-the-art methodologies. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary
 

The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings. We are aiming to recruit a skilled and enthusiastic research professional to work on a newly funded research project in the section of Hematopathology, Dept of Pathology, and The University of Chicago. Research focuses on 1) illustrating the epigenetic and genetic mechanisms that control normal hematopoiesis and the pathogenesis of hematologic malignancies, such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 2) developing novel diagnostics and therapeutics for more effective of hematologic diseases. The successful applicants will have the opportunities to work with state-of-the-art molecular and imaging technologies. Responsibilities

  • Conducting research experiments in cell culture, clinical specimens and animal models under the direction of the principle investigator (PI) and following proper procedures and protocols.
  • Initiating and performing collaborative experiments with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator and managing data files.
  • Providing general administrative support.
  • Provides technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a basic biology or biomedical science.
  • Higher degrees are also encouraged.

Experience:

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in a related job discipline including competency with western blot, gel separation of DNA and RNA and basic computer skills. 
  • Willingness and capability of working with animal models (mice).

Preferred Competencies

  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn new research techniques and to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness and capability of working with animal models (mice).
  • Relevant experience in a biology or medical research, especially experience in protein analysis and molecular biology.
  • Skills in mouse models and bioinformatics/computer science.
