Position Overview
A research technician position is available is available in the Respiratory Neural Control Laboratory, directed by Kristi Streeter, PhD, in the Department of Physical Therapy. The focus of our lab is on the role of afferents in respiratory control, the mechanisms by which phrenic afferents induce respiratory motor plasticity, and the therapeutic potential of respiratory afferent activation after cervical spinal cord injury. Current studies utilize a multi-disciplinary approach including behavioral studies, neurophysiological preparations, and molecular techniques.
Duties and Responsibilities
Major responsibility will be to help perform plethysmography experiments, assist with adeno-associated viral strategies to manipulate respiratory afferent activity, perform spinal cord injuries, and perform histology/immunohistochemistry. In addition, the successful application will be expected to participate in general lab maintenance including ordering supplies; organizing and maintaining files and records; preparing solutions and reagents for experiments; etc. Participation in both independent research as well as working on a research team is expected.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A bachelor’s degree in biology or related field with 1-2 years of related lab experience, preferably with rodents. Must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary. Successful candidate will be expected to: work independently, effectively communicate in both written reports and oral presentations, work well in a team setting, ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures, and possess attention to detail. Proficiency in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, are necessary.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Master’s degree in Biology, or related field. Previous experience with electrophysiology, surgery, animal handling, basic molecular biology techniques, immunohistochemistry, tissue processing and/or data analysis utilizing Spike2, MATLAB, Illustrator and Photoshop are desirable.
