The Office of Institutional Research and Analytics conducts institutional research and partners with the campus community to support planning, accreditation, and evidence-based decision-making for student success. The main function of a research technician is to provide expertise in data analysis, visualization, mining, and reporting to campus stakeholders.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct data mining, reporting, analyses, and writing summaries in support of planning, enrollment management, policy formation, decision-making, and accreditation. Report for internal and external surveys, local, state and federal reporting and information requests. Responsible for generating statistics for external surveys and information requests (from the CSU Chancellor's Office, IPEDS, College Board, Princeton Review, US News World Report, National Science Foundation, and other organizations).
  • Construct, implement, and evaluate internal surveys. Work cooperatively with campus stakeholders on the improvement of Institutional Research data warehouses and standardized data report queries in the development of a wide range of web-based projects, such as dashboards and dynamic statistical reporting, providing end user training where required. Create and maintain accurate SPSS syntax and SQL scripts to extract data, conduct analyses, prepare and finalize Enrollment Report System (ERS) files, design and update dashboards, and fulfill adhoc requests.
  • Prepares data, materials, and reports for institutional self-study, program review, departmental self-study, and other data requestors especially in support of institutional evaluation; designs and implements questionnaires and report on results.
  • Stay up to date on data software and reporting techniques. Performs other classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Applicants must possess the equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university, including or supplemented by a course in statistics.
    • Additional experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledges and abilities delineated above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • One year of experience in technical research or statistical work. One year of graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration, or engineering fields may be substituted for the required experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of research techniques and the methods of preparation of research reports; working knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of frequency series, data, simple correlation methods, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers.
  • Ability to assist in preparation of questionnaires, gathering and analyzing research data, and in compiling data for reports and summaries in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action; ability to speak and write effectively.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a graduate degree in computer science, data science, or related field is preferred.
  • Experience in dashboard and report development in Tableau, SQL or any multidimensional database programs, and CSU reporting procedures and requirements are preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,200 per month
Classification Salary Range: $3,505 - $6,312 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Temporary (up to one year with the possibility of further renewal)
Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
