About the role:

The Patapoutian lab, an HHMI laboratory at Scripps Research Institute, is seeking a Research Technician with expertise in electrophysiology to supervise and perform technical and administrative tasks. We are a very collaborative and intellectually curious group. You will oversee management of lab, supervise lab technicians, and contribute experimentally to research projects.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform whole cell patch clamp electrophysiological techniques

  • Conduct experimental design, data acquisition, analysis using PClamp.

  • Maintain electrophysiology rigs, manage data, and prepare figures.

  • Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including insuring operation of essential equipment, stocking supplies, arranging material transfers, reviewing budgets, and managing animal and safety protocols.  

  • Oversee mouse colonies.

  • Develop and implement laboratory guidelines.

  • Train incoming and current personnel, supervise research technicians. 

  • Maintain protocols and proper documentation.

What you bring:

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in biomedical or related sciences. (PhD preferred)

Experience: 

  • Whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology experience required. Cell attached and excised patch electrophysiology experience a plus. Pharmacology experience preferred.

  • Skilled in tissue culture of cell lines including cDNA transfections.

  • Minimum two years of lab experience. Some supervisory experience preferred. Salary and title commensurate with experience.


Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

Compensation Range

$17.08 (minimum) - $21.35 (midpoint) - $27.76 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Hourly

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
