About the Department
Butner Beef Cattle Field Lab (BBCFL) is a 1,250-acre research unit located about 50 miles north of campus with a staff of 9.5 FTE. BBCFL serves as a research platform for research on beef cattle including nutrition, physiology, genetics, pest control, pasture management, crop production, and related areas. BBCFL serves as a training and demonstration area utilized by graduate student and the general public.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Technician position on research stations supports agricultural field research. As research programs evolve over time, this position may be called upon to do a wide variety of tasks, all related to agricultural research and support.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operating agricultural and construction equipment proficiently.
  • Transporting animals, feed, supplies, or equipment with a CDL license.
  • Assisting in field crop management, horticultural crop care, and livestock handling.

Work Environment:
  • Outdoor work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions including heat and cold.
  • Potential involvement with field crops, horticultural crops, and livestock management.

  • The validity and success of research outcomes depend significantly on the diligent work of the Research Technician.
  • Their contributions directly influence the integrity and reliability of research findings.

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Basic familiarity with livestock management and farm equipment (tractors and backhoes) operation and the ability to operate that equipment safely and accurately.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs on a daily basis, with or without reasonable accommodations, on a daily basis.
  • Ability to read and follow research protocols and pesticide labels.
  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written forms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in agriculture.
  • Experience in livestock and operation of farm equipment or research equipment.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC Driver’s License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
