Department Description

The Department of Genetics is a Basic Science Department in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The mission of our Department embodies research and education while serving as a focal point for integrated basic and clinical genetic efforts conducted across the University and its affiliated hospitals. The Department of Genetics is comprised of 28 Tenure-Track Faculty positions, 14 EHRA Non-Faculty positions, 24 Postdoctoral Research Fellows and graduate students working in labs. There are 60 permanent full-time SHRA positions and 141 graduate students in the graduate programs.

Position Description

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee day-to-day operations pertaining to quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) of incoming and outgoing DNA, RNA, Libraries, and Pooled Libraries submitted to the High-Throughput Sequencing Facility (HTSF). The Research Technician will conduct assays to evaluate samples for quality to facilitate the highest quality material being submitted to the Sequencing Facility branch of the HTSF. Other responsibilities will include using QAQC values collected on libraries to construct Pools of Libraries, entering in data of QAQC into our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and communicating with the HTSF’s Customer Support Specialists when input from clients is needed regarding submitted material quality.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

1 year minimum experience in a research lab, industrial lab, or university core facility

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidate will have the following:
1. Exposure to LIMS systems for sample tracking
2. Ability to demonstrate applied knowledge for evaluating DNA and RNA sample quality
3. Bachelor’s Degree or higher in the fields of Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Animal Bioscience
