SUMMARY: 

This Research Technician position is in a microbiology laboratory. The position requires performance of technical laboratory duties and data analysis in support of a federally-funded microbiology research project. This position also requires field work, i.e. collection of surface water and sewage samples in the Tampa Bay area. The position has the potential to become full-time and to provide more responsibilities and opportunities in the future.

 

DUTIES:

This position requires preparation of surface water and wastewater samples for quantitative PCR (qPCR) and culture analysis. The technician also carries out qPCR and culture analysis of fecal bacteria, including enterococci. Data analysis includes preparation of spreadsheets, graphs and tables.  

  • Performs standard membrane filtration of water and wastewater samples.
  • Carries out culture and quantitative analysis of several antibiotic-resistant bacterial taxa, including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp.
  • Collaborates with other lab members to trouble shoot methodological issues.
  • Maintains quality analysis/quality control records for all aspects of the research project.
  • Keeps records of the conduct and outcome of laboratory analyses. Enters data into spreadsheets.
  • Prepares graphs, graphs, charts and tables from experimental results for inclusion in presentations and publications.
  • Conducts elementary statistical analysis on the data.

 

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience):

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and three years of laboratory or research experience. College coursework in a natural or physical science may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

A driver’s license that is valid in the US is required.

A Bachelor’s degree or higher is preferred. Experience with optimizing culture methods for specific bacteria is preferred. Experience with molecular biology methods such as qPCR is preferred. Experience with field work is preferred. Experience with drafting formal laboratory reports is preferred.
