Job Duties:


Care of animals in research, clinic, or teaching environment. Caring for several different species, employees are responsible for feeding, watering, cleaning, handling, and administering routine medications (vaccines, topical ointments) according to established protocols and instructions. Husbandry duties involve specific pathogen-free/biohazardous areas carrying infectious agents transmissible to humans or which have been experimentally exposed to radiologic, biologic, or chemical hazardous materials.
Maintain records on animal activities such as food/water consumed, vaccines/medications received, and environmental conditions such as room temperature and lighting cycles. Employees observe and record animal behaviors and health conditions as directed by protocol and instruction for review by a team leader, research technician, primary investigator, or veterinarian. Will select pairs for routine breeding, and may make recommendations on breeding pairs for more complex breeding activities. Animal euthanasia is performed per the primary investigator or veterinarian's instructions. Performs husbandry duties, specialized environmental conditions, and a greater variety of animals and/or specialized care and knowledge of a unique species or breed of animal.

Department of Comparative Medicine cares for a variety of species in several facilities across all East Carolina University campuses. We provide barrier, containment, and quarantine housing, as well as surgical and technical support. The animal care and use program at East Carolina University is USDA Registered (#55-R-0010), PHS assured (D16-00294), and fully accredited by AAALAC, International.
