RESEARCH ASSISTANT position in the Lefkowitz lab at Duke University, Department of Medicine
The Lefkowitz laboratory in the departments of medicine, biochemistry, and chemistry is looking for a driven and motivated Research Assistant.
The lab seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms of a family of cell-surface proteins called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) by applying methods in biochemistry, structural biology, medicinal-chemistry, and signaling. GPCRs are the targets of roughly one-third of all prescribed human therapeutics. They impact all aspects of physiology and human disorders, including cardiovascular, neurological, cancer, and metabolic. This position will be working with a highly experienced assistant professor to develop chemical modulators of GPCR singling proteins and dissect molecular mechanisms using pharmacological, medicinal chemistry, and structural biology approaches including electron microscopy imaging. The ideal candidate will assist in experimental data analysis and interpretation while demonstrating excellent communication skills
The ideal candidate will be not only innately curious but also someone who has a passion for continuing to push the boundaries of our understanding. The ideal candidate would be interested in joining the lab immediately with a minimum 1-year commitment. The position is perfect for post-bac gap-year students, particularly those who want to pursue MD, Ph.D., or MD/Ph.D. studies and, thus, are highly encouraged to apply.
Candidates with BS/MS degree whose majors in biology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or chemistry are preferred; all motivated students from other natural science majors will be considered.
If interested in this exciting opportunity, send a paragraph describing your interest and CV via email attachment to: Dr. Alem Kahsai (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Dr. Robert Lefkowitz (email@example.com ).
Work generally requires skills acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other science related scientific field program.
Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
