Occupational Summary 

The research technician will perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in investigating the metabolic influence on sex determination in the mouse. (S)he will obtain data and confer with me on a regular basis to plan experiments and interpret results. (S)he will also participate in general laboratory duties such as making reagents and maintaining the mouse colony. (S)he will review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to these research experiments. 

Work Performed 

  • Perform dissections on mouse embryos to isolate tissue for experiments. 
  • Learn and perform organ cultures. 
  • Fix tissue for cryosections or for whole mount immunofluorescent staining. 
  • Perform fluorescent antibody staining of samples and mount on slides for imaging. 
  • Obtain training and perform fluorescent microscopy using several available microscopes to collect images. 
  • Learn image processing techniques from other laboratory members. 
  • Maintain digital notebook for raw data and organize/prepare scientific data for analysis by the principal investigator. 
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions for your experiments. 
  • Develop figures for scientific publications 
  • Assist with performing other small and short-term basic experiments and completing individual parts of an overall large experiment/project 
  • Help with turtle husbandry and dissections during turtle season. 

Required Qualifications at this Level 

Education/Training: Work generally requires skills acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other science related scientific field program. 

Experience: Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience. Experience working in a developmental biology or evolutionary developmental biology lab is desirable. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
