Summary
The Westbrook lab is seeking a talented research technician to work in an interdisciplinary team environment on the development of new therapeutic strategies for cancer. As this project’s key focus is on therapeutic targeting of cancer, this position will involve modeling preclinical efficacy of novel therapeutic targets and clinically relevant therapies. Candidates should be organized, goal-oriented, and able to learn new techniques quickly. Cross-training and transparency among the team is encouraged and practiced.
There is periodic exposure to unpleasant conditions but the work is still viewed as relatively comfortable in a laboratory environment.
Job Duties
- Confers with Principal Investigator (PI) and other lab members to plan and execute complex experiments.
- Prepares and conducts laboratory research experiments using multiple plasmid and cell line reagents.
- Clearly documents and communicates (oral and written) experimental results and progress.
- Assists in the preparation of laboratory reports.
- Annotates and maintains collaborative protocol repositories for all lab members.
- Works effectively in a highly dynamic, multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment.
- Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, supplies and work areas.
- Prepares figures and assists with writing related to experiments performed
- Frequently handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, such as those found in an ordinary laboratory environment.
- Executes mammalian cell culture and follow sterile technique.
- Executes and validates genetic engineering approaches of cell line models as needed, including but not limited to gene knockout, exogenous over-expression, and endogenous protein tagging.
- Works with other lab members to design and generate expression vectors specific to a given experimental goal.
- Employs various experimental approaches, including but not limited to expression vector usage, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence imaging.
- Executes molecular biology approaches, including but not limited to RNA and protein isolation, western blot, PCR, qPCR, and RNA dot blot.
- Evaluates literature and discuss with key knowledge holders in order to design appropriate validation assays of engineered vectors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- One year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
- Experience in tissue culture and basic molecular biology techniques is preferred.
- Experience in cancer research is a plus.
