Position Highlights Our laboratory has initiated several research projects involving cryogenic storage and agriculture in lunar or alternate extraterrestrial contexts. The candidate will be coordinating with laboratory faculty, technical staff, and graduate and undergraduate students involved the various projects, while assisting with designing cryogenics/biological components and experiments and furthering the projects' viability. A strong interest and experience in bioscience and engineering design is necessary, along with the ability to communicate as part of research team. Results from this work will enhance laboratory capability in further development of these concepts for laboratory demonstration, flight tests and for launch aboard a live payload.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work with PI and collaborating faculty on developing research plans/emerging focus areas.  Turns these plans into weekly, monthly, and semester milestones.
  • Mentor undergrads who will perform various subtasks on the Lunar Ark and Terrarium projects.
  • Actively perform literature reviews and keep track of advances in the field, particularly in the realm of bio-engineering and technology for advancing habitation in space, and technology for cryo-preservation.
  • Architect innovative and robust subsystems and technologies to address practical challenges in developing and operating the Lunar Ark Concept and Terrarium concepts. Utilize tools such as Visio, Lucid Chart and MATLAB for designing and tuning these architectures.
  • Analyze and perform in-depth trade studies of competing technologies and methods to enable cryo-preservation, facilitate habitability in space, and associate technologies to support and monitor for extended durations.
  • Perform duties co-authoring peer-reviewed conference papers, journal manuscripts, conference presentations, and posters.  This will involve providing younger students guidance in paper content expectations, structure, format, and correctness.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
