The Zimmer laboratory at the University of Virginia School of Medicine has an opening for a Research Technician II in the field of Molecular Biology. Our group studies how cells produce carbohydrate-based surface structures that aid in tissue biogenesis, cell wall formation, or encapsulation. We use a broad spectrum of model systems, including vertebrate, microbial and plant systems to gain structural and functional insights into polysaccharide biosynthesis and secretion systems.
The successful candidate will join a diverse and highly motivated team of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and laboratory specialists. Routine tasks will include cloning, protein expression in bacterial and eukaryotic expression systems, protein purification, functional characterizations, as well as sample preparation for structural analyses. The new Research Technician II will work on an independent research project, while interfacing closely with other group members.

What you’ll do:
Perform skilled technical procedures such as electrophoresis, chromatography, animal surgery, or microscopy.
Operate complex scientific instrumentation.
Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining the most suitable methods to be used in research. Collaborate with other lab members on experimental design, creation of appropriate methods and protocols, and development of new laboratory techniques.
Analyze data, formulate conclusions, and create appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, and prepare and present written or oral progress reports regarding studies.
Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data. May use specialized software applications to assemble, manipulate, format and/or perform statistical analyses of data.
Actively contribute to laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
Assist with laboratory equipment maintenance.
May participate in performing inventories of materials and ordering supplies.
May maintain insects, plants, animals, and/or bacterial and tissue cultures for experimental purposes.
May demonstrate and explain various laboratory techniques to laboratory personnel, students, and others.
May train others in performing technical procedures and evaluating experimental results.
What you bring:
Education
Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate field; or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
Experience
Two years of laboratory experience in Molecular Biology is required.
Expertise in Glycobiology or Structural Biology are advantageous but not required.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of laboratory protocols and techniques.
Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population
Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work independently, use good judgment, and monitor completion of assigned duties
Ability to operate complex scientific equipment.
Fully understands role in the work unit and in related units; understands how the job supports achievement of the organization’s goals.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

Compensation Range
$39,000.00 (minimum) - $48,804.00 (midpoint) - $63,400.00 (maximum)Pay Type:
AnnualHHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
