Position Summary
The Fay & Carl Simons Center for the Biology of Hearing and Deafness has an opening for a Research Technician II to join the Sheets and Warchol labs. We use zebrafish as a model for human hearing and balance with the goal of understanding how to protect and repair human inner ears from damage. The successful candidate will be involved with projects identifying factors that promote nerve development and regeneration.
Assists with the technical aspects of studies and experiments, including documentation and preparation of materials.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists with research studies, experiments and assays, including collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
- Assists with microscopy experiments, including fluorescent immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and live imaging of transgenic fish.
- Assists with molecular biology experiments (cloning, PCR, RT-PCR, DNA isolation and sequencing), as well as generation of transgenic lines and CRISPR-Cas9 mutants.
- Responsible for fish line maintenance, genotyping and identifying transgenic lines.
- Performs data entry and maintains data files on research.
- Prepares tissue cultures, reagents, probe tests, etc.
- Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
- Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
- May assist with training new lab members as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledgeable within one or more of the following subjects: Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Physiology, Molecular Cell Biology.
- Previous research experience with molecular biology and confocal microscopy.
- Experience working with the zebrafish model.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
- Exceptional organization skills.
- Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
- Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and up to 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 4 years.

Salary Range
$16.59 - $25.92 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
