Summary
The Garcia laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM)'s Center for Drug Discovery has National Institute of Health (NIH) supports to identify novel male infertility related genes through cutting-edge whole genome sequencing techniques, and to understand the functional significance of these novel genes through genetically manipulated mouse models, and to develop small-molecule inhibitors against identified functionally relevant targets. The goal is to identify new genes that underlie idiopathic male infertility and to define the functional requirement of novel male reproductive tract-specific genes. The lab is looking for applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in biology or hard science, experience conducting research during their academic career, have a strong record of academic excellence, and be highly motivated. BCM is located in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center and offers a highly interactive environment and a strong infrastructure for research and career development.
Job Duties
- Performs human and mouse DNA and RNA isolation for PCR and high-throughput sequencing techniques.
- Performs library synthesis and sets up sequencing reactions on sequencing device.
- Works on organization and cataloging of human samples acquired through the Urology clinic.
- Performs IRB-approved patient history screening to confirm suitability of samples for DNA sequence analysis.
- Conducts male reproductive tissue dissection and processes histology and immunohistochemistry.
- Works on mouse husbandry that includes breeding, weaning, and genotyping animals.
- Conducts mouse epididymal sperm isolation that includes computer assisted sperm analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or hard science.
- Experience in computer science.
- Experience in research during their academic career, have a strong record of academic excellence, and be highly motivated.
