100% grant-funded position is for 1 year to start with extensions contingent on funding, performance, and needs of the lab.

Research Technician II position in the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology department at Duke University as part of Dr. Clare Smith’s research program. We are interested in biological questions related to infectious diseases. The successful candidate will become part of a cutting-edge research program focused on understanding the host-pathogen interactions that underlie tuberculosis. Currently, the Smith Lab is assisting in the Duke COVID-19 research effort.

Major responsibilities

-perform a variety of laboratory experiments using both routine and specialized techniques and methods

-Collect, analyze and process laboratory samples

-Conduct mammalian tissue culture-based maintenance and experiments

-Record results, organize data and perform basic computations

-Maintain lab supplies and equipment

-Maintain Mycobacterial stock and animal breeding records

-Comply with all safety and infection control standards

Must have – Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or equivalent, excellent organizational and communication skills, ability to perform duties independently as well as work as part of a team.

Preferred – demonstrated experience with mycobacterial infections in model organisms, genetic engineering in model organisms, experience with mammalian tissue culture.

Additional extras – knowledge of Duke ordering and administrative systems, basics in R/Matlab/python for data analysis and statistics

Working conditions – Wet laboratory, biosafety level 3 containment work, some animal and human specimen work.


Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
