Research Tech II

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

A full-time Research Technician position is available in Dr. Heather M. Stapleton’s environmental analytical laboratory in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Primary tasks include analysis of environmental and biological samples (e.g. drinking water, dust, serum, urine) for organic contaminants (e.g. PFAS, flame retardants, PAHs, plasticizers, pesticides) using mass spectrometry. Additional responsibilities will include assisting researchers and graduate students with research projects and contributing to presentation and publication of research findings.

Primary responsibilities:

- Sample preparation techniques including solvent extraction, column chromatography and solid phase extraction;

- Operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation (gas chromatography mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry);

- Data analysis (e.g. mass spectrometry integration and quantification, data management and basic statistical analyses)

- Field sampling of air, water, soil, house dust may also be required to support several ongoing projects.

Preferences

B.S. in chemistry or similar field with several years of experience in environmental or analytical chemistry

Experience: Strong gas and/or liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry experience; experience with preparation of environmental and human samples for chemical analyses and developing methods for sample preparation; experience in analyzing data and scientific writing

Computer Skills:

Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, mass spectrometry-based software, statistical packages

Salary: Dependent upon qualifications and experience

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
