Position Highlights The Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment is hiring a research technician to assist a University of Arizona graduate student project studying the ecology of the invasive American bullfrog by tracking their movement, dispersal, and reproductive phenology in the San Rafael Valley, southeast of Tucson, Arizona. This information will be used to inform ongoing bullfrog eradication projects for the conservation of native aquatic species. The technician will be an employee of the University of Arizona and will work under the supervision of the Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

Duties & Responsibilities

Position Duties:

  • Assist with visual encounter and aquatic trapping surveys for American bullfrogs (including night surveys), capture and handle bullfrogs, assist with measuring and marking bullfrogs using toe clipping and visual implant tags, attach external VHF radio transmitters, and monitor bullfrog movements with VHF telemetry at night during the monsoon season.
  • Help recover bullfrogs removed through ongoing bullfrog eradication projects, transport bullfrog carcasses to the University of Arizona, and dissect bullfrogs to record reproductive and diet data. 
  • Assist with data quality control and entry at the end of the season.  

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Attention to detail and the ability to accurately collect and record data.
  • The ability to work well unsupervised, with a partner, and in a group setting.
  • Enthusiasm for wildlife conservation and willingness to withstand challenges that come with field work such as working in desert heat, being at risk of encountering venomous reptiles, working at night, and navigating through dense vegetation near water.
  • Ability to navigate using a handheld GPS unit.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Most sites are accessible by 4WD driving but hiking up to 3 miles over rugged terrain at night may be required. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent learning attained through experience may be required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Pursuing or obtained a BS degree in wildlife ecology, biology, evolution, environmental science, or other related fields.
  • Experience handling amphibians.
  • Experience working in/around water.
  • Experience with VHF radio telemetry.
  • Experience with southeastern Arizona reptiles and amphibians.
  • Previous experience as a field technician.
  • Experience car camping and/or hiking.
  • Experience driving 4WD vehicles on poorly maintained dirt roads.
  • Experience navigating using a handheld GPS unit.
