Position Summary
Responsible for assisting with laboratory duties in a research setting; performs routine tests with direction from supervisor, manager or higher-level technician.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists investigator or higher-level technician with research studies, including animal colony management, animal handling and husbandry.
  • Maintains files on research and assists with data entry using a customized web based software program for tracking animal colonies.
  • Collects tissue samples, prepares reagents, and performs PCR genotyping.
  • Assists with coordinating experiments with laboratory staff for multiple clients across the University.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.

Working Conditions

  • Works in a barrier facility laboratory environment.
  • Must be physically able to wear protective equipment.
  • Must be able to lift 5 lbs. and be physically able to stand and move for 70% of working hours. 
  • Must be able to provide standard and specialized care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software (Word, Excel) and general lab equipment.


Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.

Salary Range
$15.76 - $21.09 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
