Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of molecular biology techniques to generate recombinant antibodies for pathogen diagnostics.

Work Performed

Under general supervision of direct supervisors, the technician will: 1) perform selection procedures to obtain pathogen-specific antibody clones from M13 phage display libraries; 2) characterize antibody clones for specificity by performing immunoassays; 3) use molecular biology techniques such as PCR to clone antibody genes for recombinant expression; 4) perform cell culture and purify antibodies produced by expression cell lines; and 5) set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests.

The technician will also perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests, experiments and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results; and confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and execute plans for research experiments.

 Required Qualifications at this Level


Education/Training:

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology or other science related scientific field.


Experience:

While no specific experience is required, prior experience with molecular biology (PCR, gel electrophoresis, restriction digests, plasmid preps), bacterial microbiology, M13 phage propagation techniques, or performance of routine immunologic assays would be preferred.

The position classification may be adjusted based on previous experience.
