Position Summary
The Zebrafish Facility is seeking applicants for a Research Technician I in the Department of Developmental Biology at Washington University School of Medicine. The Research Tech I will carry out general fish husbandry duties and other research laboratory functions with direction from supervisor, manager or higher-level technician.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists investigator or higher-level technician with research studies, experiments and assays including collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs data entry and maintains data files on research.
  • Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Following standard operating procedures for working with zebrafish, performs the following duties which include but are not limited to:
    • Records daily light, temperature and humidity controls.
    • Records water quality.
    • Performs daily, weekly, monthly and yearly operations to maintain the operating quality of the Fish Facility.
    • Ensures feedings of fish.
    • Maintains saltwater rotifers and stocks young zebrafish larvae on nursery system.
    • Maintains feeding labels.
    • Washes and cleans/sterilizes tanks and other equipment.
    • Operates cleaning equipment including washer and autoclave.
  • Receives and stores materials and supplies.
  • Maintains close surveillance of fish health, reporting signs of illness/problems to facility supervisor.
  • Participates in training, continuing education.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.


Preferred Qualifications


Enthusiasm for molecular biology, genetics, and zebrafish research.


Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.

Salary Range
$15.76 - $21.09 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
