Crop Science is a diverse discipline that encompasses research, extension and teaching related to the genetic improvement, production and utilization of agronomic and turfgrass crops. From genetically altering crop plants to withstand drought, to management of biofuel crops, our scientists are working to feed, fuel, and clothe our world’s growing population.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Technician will perform field and greenhouse trials to evaluate and characterize various vegetation management practices in various agronomic settings including right-of-ways, row crops, and turfgrass systems. Competency in greenhouse/field trial procedures, data collection, and statistical analysis are a must for this position. Individual must be self-motivated, well organized, and capable of communicating results.
This position will assist with field, greenhouse and laboratory/controlled growth chamber experiments for a research program focusing on vegetation management along roadsides. The individual will work with undergraduate and graduate students, research technicians, and principal investigators to initiate, monitor, and summarize experiments to fulfill objectives. Current areas of research include turfgrass establishment, weed management, plant growth regulator programs, and pesticide environmental fate with an overarching goal of devising comprehensive vegetation management programs.
The position will be responsible for, but not limited to:
  • Assembling, calibrating equipment, and delivering liquid-and dry products over variable field conditions and application techniques.
  • Irrigation audits in field and greenhouse settings.
  • Routine maintenance of the aforementioned equipment.
  • Establishment, maintenance and evaluations in field and greenhouse settings.
  • Provide insight on experimental methods required for a given evaluation as well as routinely lead method development of procedures.
  • Responsible for data collection and quality assurance in numerous field and greenhouse experiments. Provides insight on collection methods and parameters of interest.
  • Responsible for assisting with the development of new research projects in field, greenhouse, growth chamber, and laboratory settings. The positon assists with the development of research concepts, protocols, and data collection methods. Assists with writing research proposals to various funding sources. Oversee and give direction to grad students that assist in the lab.
  • Other duties as assigned.

At present, this position is listed as time-limited for two (2) years, with a maximum time-limited status of 3 years. However, the position has the potential to become permanent if future funding is secured for its continuation.

Qualifications

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Crop Science or related field.
  • Experience with field and greenhouse research.
  • At least two (2) years of driving experience.
  • Experience driving a truck with a trailer.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
  • The successful candidate will be required to independently drive a university vehicle with trailered equipment several times per year and should have the ability to do so safely.
  • Valid NC Pesticide License or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
