Job Summary
This position will contribute to studying physical processes that determine the seasonal evolution of sea ice concentration and thickness in the Southern Ocean. New insight will come from the characterization of the shape and morphology of individual sea ice floes using remote sensing data.
Essential Job Duties
The successful candidate will use observations collected from NASA's ICESat-2 laser altimeter to:
  • Detect individual sea ice floes in different regions of the Southern Ocean.
  • Process these observations along-track data sets and provide statistical analysis of sea-ice thickness across these different floes.
  • Study how these properties vary in space and time.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The candidate is also expected to interact with other project team and research group members, contribute to the generation of publication-ready figures, and document their research activities either through a manuscript or final project report.
Basic Qualifications
  • This project is intended for a senior undergraduate student with previous experience in oceanography, atmospheric science, computer science or other closely related topic.
  • Should be comfortable working with Python and have good written and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working on sea-ice related projects and/or with ICESat-2 data is highly desired.

Required Documents
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae.
