We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, scientifically curious Research Technician to work in the lab of Dr. Dominique Bergmann at Stanford University in Stanford, California. The Bergmann lab is focusing on fundamental developmental questions – they study cell-fate transitions, cell division and cell-cell signaling. These broad questions are addressed specifically in the stomatal lineages of various genetic model plants, including Arabidopsis Brachypodium and tomato.  For more information about the Bergmann lab, please visit https://web.stanford.edu/group/bergmann/cgi-bin/bergmannlab/

The Research Technician will support research projects under general supervision and perform experimental techniques such as standard molecular methods (PCR, electrophoresis, molecular cloning, DNA/RNA extraction), plant-related work (crossing, planting, harvesting), tissue-culturing and callus transformation, and general lab support and maintenance. This would be an ideal role for a recent college graduate who wants to gain 2-3 years of full-time hands-on academic research experience before moving on to attend graduate school. This role will have the opportunity to earn co-authorship on research publications, attend conferences, and present their work in regularly scheduled lab meetings. Former Bergmann lab technicians have been accepted to prestigious graduate programs.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist scientists and technicians by performing investigative procedures and operating a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment, i.e. microscopy, molecular cloning, PCR, genotyping, gel electrophoresis, and biochemical assays.

  • Maintain plants and/or bacterial and tissue cultures for experimental purposes.

  • Maintain plant growth facilities to be suitable for transgenics, regeneration and intensive phenotyping.

  • Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data and information in support of lab research; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs and reports.

  • Configure and operate laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data, tabulate data; keep laboratory records.

  • Maintain chemical stocks and inventory in compliance with environmental health and safety standards.  Order chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies.

  • Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.

  • Read literature applicable to research areas as required.

  • Demonstrate various laboratory techniques to laboratory personnel and students as needed.

  • Contribute to research results on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications:

Education

  • A bachelor’s degree is required. A major in biology, molecular biology, or a closely related scientific discipline is strongly preferred.

Experience

  • At least 1 year of previous hands-on laboratory experience is required. Significant laboratory experience obtained during undergraduate studies (honors thesis, internship, etc.) is acceptable and will be considered.

  • Previous experience working with DNA, cloning, PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, and other molecular biology techniques is strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience working with plants in a laboratory environment would be a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High motivation to support basic research and strong interest in fundamental biological questions.

  • Ability and willingness to learn plant transformation.

  • Strong initiative, proactiveness, and capacity for creative problem solving.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, prioritization skills, and time management skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail with emphasis on keeping records of experiments and results.

  • Proficient computer skills (PC and/or Mac, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).

  • Ability and willingness to have a flexible work schedule to accommodate experimental needs and other lab needs as required.

  • Ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to follow instructions with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be
    mentored.

  • Ability to interact positively and work well with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds.

Application Instructions

  • Please apply via the job posting on HHMI’s careers page. Please do not contact the lab directly – applications/CVs that are sent to the lab will not be considered.

  • Please including the following information along with your resume/CV (preferably as one PDF document) in your application:

    • A cover letter detailing your interest in this role

    • Names and contact information for three professional references

The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
