Job Description

The Honeycutt laboratory within the School for Biological and Health System Engineering (SBHSE) at Arizona State University is seeking a Research Technician to join our team. The Honeycutt lab is currently investigating a new adjuvant therapy to enhance arm/hand function in individuals with stroke. The ideal candidate would have enthusiasm for working with clinical populations as well as driving new questions and avenues of research surrounding laboratory research.

Essential Duties

The Research Technician’s primary responsibility would be leading and running a randomized clinical trial to assess the success of a novel telehealth therapy. The technician will be responsible for data collection, analysis, dissemination of research findings. This process will include working directly with individuals with stroke, performing remote training sessions several days a week, and processing data using Matlab and statistical analysis using R. If possible, the Technician will also perform Electromyographic and Motion Capture of subjects. The technician will also be responsible for broad project management of the trial including coordinating with our clinician collaborators and assisting with recruitment. In addition to the above clinical trial, the Technician should become an integrated member of the lab group pursuing additional avenues of research of interest to the Technician and/or assisting with another research ongoing in the laboratory.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in working with human subject research.
  • Experience with patient populations a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data acquisition and analysis process.
  • Experience working with motion capture systems (Vicon, PhaseSpace) and Electrmyography a plus.
  • Programming background with Matlab or Python.
  • Experience in specifying research objectives, plan & perform multi-day training sessions, coordinate across several team members.
  • Experience in taking initiative, be organized, be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadline requirements, work independently and work as part of a team. 
  • Evidence in effective interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail. 

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled lab or office setting subject to extended period of sitting. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting to 20 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Ability to work both independently and within a complex structured team. Normally receives no instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments with review of completed tasks. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices & policies in selecting methods & techniques for obtaining solutions. May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories including but not limited to lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator.
