A Research Technician position is available in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan Medical School. The goal of our research program is to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in brain tumor formation, and the role of specific signaling pathways and stem cells in tumor progression and resistance to therapies. The project also involves cancer cell genome-editing technologies, epigenetics, whole cancer genome sequencing, bioinformatics analysis and DNA repair mechanisms. This project has a strong translational component to develop and implement novel therapeutic strategies in human clinical trials for brain cancer. 

The Research Technician will perform complex experimental procedures in one or more areas of work under the supervision of the Principal Investigators and/or higher-level research staff. They will also be required to perform complex statistical calculations and data analysis, prepare PowerPoint presentations and figures for manuscripts, perform library research on specified topics and prepare bibliographies, assist with manuscript and grant proposals preparation.  Our laboratories offer state-of-the-art facilities and a very productive and exciting research environment.  

  • Minimum of Bachelors in Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or Computational Biology, or related. 
  • Must have at least 1-2 years of various laboratory and data analysis experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with rodents required, along with expertise in related in vivo techniques and assessments (e.g. rodent handling, surgery, injections, in vivo imaging).
  • Experience with cell culture, and in vitro cell-based assays (e.g. tissue dissection, tissue processing, sectioning, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, western blot, ELISA and microscopy).
  • Must be proficient with standard computer software (e.g. MS word, excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator) and data analysis software and willing to learn new programs as needed.
  • Organization, attention to detail, punctuality, and flexibility required.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision as required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Background in neuroscience or biochemistry preferred.
  • Experience with stem cell culture and differentiation protocols and flow cytometry preferred.
  • Experience with image analysis techniques and programs preferred.
