Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Research Computing, the Research Computing Instrumentation/HPC Specialist will work closely with Research Computing team members to support researchers (e.g., faculty, staff, students, etc.) on all Tufts campuses (Medford, Boston, and Grafton). Support includes engaging in research technology consultations and providing complex technical support of specialized research systems including scientific equipment or high-performance standalone data analysis workstations. As a trusted advisor, this position will work closely with faculty and research groups on the full life cycle management of research technology services and instrumentation systems. This includes specifications, vendor coordination, provisioning, setup, configuration, networking, firewall, security, data management workflows, systems upgrade, and decommissioning. In addition, this role will champion research technology solutions and provide basic support relating to the university-wide High Performance Compute (HPC) cluster, research storage (Cluster and desktop Rstore), and data management.

The ideal candidate may have a flexible work schedule with some remote work options but must be on campus a minimum of 3 days per week and within commuting distance to provide and maintain high-level technical support to Tufts research faculty and research groups.

 

Qualifications

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience typically acquired through a completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in related field with two years related experience or 5 years or more related experience in a higher education, research, or scientific environment.
  • Background supporting academic researchers (e.g., faculty, staff, students, etc.).
  • Experience with standard and customized operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux (RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.).
  • Familiarity with data security best practices.
  • Familiarity with High Performance Compute (HPC) clusters.
  • Familiarity with scripting and programing language basics (e.g., Shell, Batch, Perl, Python, etc.).
  • Experience collaborating with colleagues across job functions and departments.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified in one or more of the following: Apple, A+, Network+, Security+, ITIL, MTA
  • Two years’ experience with research data management, particularly with sponsored research programs.
  • Two years’ experience with high-performance computing.
  • Experience with scripting and programing language basics (e.g., Shell, Batch, Perl, Python, etc.).
  • Experience working with HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography ) Mass Spec, micro-array scanners, sequencing, and next generation sequencing instruments such Illumina, Agilent, NanoString, Biomek, etc.
  • Familiarity/understanding common analysis tools including but not limited to Mathematica, MATLAB, R, Maple, Python, STATA, SPSS etc.
