Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV for the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) located on the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences Campus in Piscataway, New Jersey.
The Oldenburg Laboratory at CABM is seeking an outstanding Research Teaching Specialist IV to join an exciting neuroscience project developing and utilizing new optical and molecular tools to study neural circuits. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Ian Oldenburg, the Research Teaching Specialist IV will contribute to investigations of the role of neural activity in guiding and initiating motor actions. The Research Teaching Specialist IV will be responsible for the conduct and execution of specialized research experiments following instructions given by the Principal Investigator. The Research Teaching Specialist IV will handle a diverse set of tasks both involving independent projects and maintaining the day-to-day activities of the lab. Tasks include animal (rodent) training, computational analyses, preparation of reagents, general maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment, and some laboratory administrative work including submitting purchase recommendations for equipment and supplies to the PI. The Research Teaching Specialist IV may assist in the management/coordination of a small laboratory. In addition, the Research Teaching Specialist IV is expected to attend laboratory meetings and conferences and learn appropriate scientific methods and procedures. This is a grant-funded position contingent on the availability of funds to support it.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Handles, breeds, genotypes, and trains rodents for experimental purposes.
  • Maintains databases of lab equipment, reagents, and animals.
  • Performs the standard experiments in the lab: Microscopy, multiphoton imaging, rodent surgical procedures, PCR, etc.
  • Manages and maintains lab supplies, stocks, equipment, inventories, and databases, and helps to evaluate and improve lab management practices as required.
  • Assists with ordering lab supplies, providing the Principal Investigator with purchase recommendations, and help improve the cost effectiveness and environmental impact of lab operations.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator with the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications by preparing text and creating figures.
  • Assists in the establishment of performance standards, as well as in the selection of methodology and instrumentation.
  • Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.
  • As assigned, performs various research and technical procedures.
  • Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians and laboratory assistants as required.
  • Keeps detailed records of procedures and experiments. May be required to compile data and present results.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant science, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior mouse work experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking, seeing, and hearing. Manual dexterity and vision sufficient for standard laboratory operations including pipetting and use of microscopes. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lab environment. Universal precautions are mandatory.
