Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III in Immunology Oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Under the direction of the Managing Director, the Research Teaching Specialist III will assist with technical laboratory procedures such as cytokine analyses, in situ hybridization, cell culture, in vitro T cell stimulations, and probe-based RNA imaging in support of the specialized research activities of the laboratory and institute. The RTS-III will also be responsible for laboratory specimen tracking, processing, organization, and analysis, and will be expected to maintain detailed records of all experiments and activities according to Immune Monitoring Facility standard operating procedures and Federal Regulations. This position will require meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills in support of our mission to provide cutting-edge correlative research for clinical trials at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Responsible for specimen processing, including transport of specimens, isolation of cells from blood and tumor samples, preparation of tissue, sample storage and sample tracking using the laboratory database.
  • Performs cell culture of human and mouse primary T cells, including mouse vaccination, in vitro stimulation, labelling, and collection of media for analysis.
  • Performs cytokine analysis experiments on human/mouse-derived serum samples utilizing the Luminex 200 multiplex test system.
  • Performs cytolysis experiments using the XCelligence Real Time Cell Analysis system.
  • Performs flow cytometry techniques using the Cytek Aurora and other flow cytometry instruments.
  • Prepares T cell cultures for downstream analysis including single-cell RNA sequencing, activation, tetramer-specificity, and viability assessment.
  • Performs staining of tissue and cell slides for RNAscope analysis and immunohistochemistry.
  • Flexible work hours to accommodate the processing the unique clinical samples.
  • Performing other laboratory duties and tasks as needed for the operation of the facility and as directed by the Managing Director.
  • Assists in packing, unpacking, storing and classification of lab supplies.
  • Maintains and monitors the cryostorage of PBMCs, serum and cells from clinical samples.
  • Assists with cross-training of shared resource staff in areas of expertise such as cell culture and T cell activation assays.
  • Reviews selected literature relevant to research activities and stays informed of advances in the field of Immunology.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Cell Biology or Immunology or related area of study, plus at least one (1) year of related laboratory experience, or Bachelor’s Degree and at least two (2) years of related laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills with assigned laboratory work and technical methods. 
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, coordination and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and an ability to set priorities for productivity. 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn laboratory database for data entry, follow laboratory safety policies and perform standard laboratory procedures utilizing sterile technique. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative, yet seek supervision as appropriate. 
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior research experience in cell culture, immunoassays, T cell stimulation and related analysis.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25lbs.

 
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lab environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, anti-neoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
