Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist II for NJMS-Medicine-Infectious Diseases. This position is under direction, and is responsible for the management of a medium-sized laboratory area. Designs and conducts highly specialized, technical research. May supervise work of technicians and be assisted by lower-level professionals.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Is responsible for communicating, planning and performing experiments with intra and extra-institutional investigators performing genotypic and phenotypic studies of clinical and laboratory BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens as part of drug development efforts.
  • Uses conventional and novel methods including advanced robotics to screen libraries of M. tuberculosis for drug tolerance and drug resistance phenotypes.
  • Performs MIC testing, kill curves and other microbiological tests to characterize M. tuberculosis and other BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens.
  • Designs and tests novel prodrugs against tuberculosis and other BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens 5. Performs genetic manipulations of M. tuberculosis and other mycobacteria including the development of resistant mutants, cloning, and gene knockouts.
  • Performs microbiological characterization different M. tuberculosis strains and M. tuberculosis mutants.
  • Performs biological experiments with inhibited M. tuberculosis.
  • Performs transcriptional and metabolomic studies and uses systems biology approaches to analyze results.
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication of data generated.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in relevant sciences plus two (2) years of related research required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be willing to work with virulent M. tuberculosis strains and murine tuberculosis models. The Fellow will need to be trained in working in a biosafety level 3 laboratory, which is mandatory for experimentation with M. tuberculosis. Training in working with murine models of tuberculosis is also required. The requirements listed must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required. Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Doctoral Degree in relevant sciences required. Experience in recombinant DNA technology (particularly that utilized for the generation of M. tuberculosis mutants), murine disease models, working in a BSL3 environment, and in biochemical studies preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMAND
This position involves prolonged standing, walking and sitting, as well as use of laboratory equipment. Must perform complex procedures and demonstrate manual dexterity. Some stooping, reaching, climbing and bending. Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6½ feet. Hearing and speech capabilities necessary to communicate with other researchers and staff in person, on the telephone and by e-mail. Vision capable of viewing gauges, computer monitors, charts, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be available to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays when necessary to meet deadlines. Must be willing to work in BSL3 facility, including that required for studies involving animal models.
