Job Title:  Research Support Specialist - Surgery

Hiring Salary/Salary Range: $15.38 - $20.00 / up to 40 hours per week

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Department of Surgery Research Team follows the mission and vision of its University through the delivery of high quality and high producing research activity. DUTIES:

  • Perform animal surgeries. Work with blood and tissue samples from animals and humans. Conduct microvascular experiments. Duties include microvessel dissection, cannulation, and perfusion, solution/chemical preparation, and data acquisition and analysis, with extensive use of microscopes, imaging devices, and computers. Culture and maintain human/animal cells using sterile techniques. Prepare sterile media and reagents. Maintain tissue culture facilities. Prepare chemicals, reagents, and solutions routinely used in the lab. Use and maintain laboratory equipment including but not limited to microplate reader, balances, centrifuges, incubators, microscopes, pipettes, laminar flow hoods, fume hoods, flow cytometer, and PCR machines. Participate in other research projects as assigned and help postdoctoral scientists and researchers at different levels. Other related jobs assigned by supervisor.
  • Assistant in scheduling animal calendars and coordinating with the animal facility for ordering, maintaining, and use of research animals. Order research supplies and maintain inventory. Record and keep purchases orders. Keep and timely update lab certifications and documentations. Clean and decontaminate laboratory glassware, bench top devices and surgical instruments. Maintain a clean and neat working environment. Other related jobs assigned by supervisor.

 POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

  • This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of laboratory or research experience. College coursework in a natural or physical science may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent degree in biology or related areas.
  • Willingness to work with research animals and animal/human blood and tissues.
  • Knowledge of mammalian anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to follow protocols precisely.
  • Previous experience in animal research is preferred.
