Overview: 

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an operations support professional for a Research Support Coordinator position in the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) to to enable the cutting-edge science and technology research mission.  This position will work as part of an integrated team that has responsibility for work planning and control in support of isotope enrichment science, research and engineering activities. This position resides in the Technical Support Services Group, and will be matrixed to support the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division and the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division within ISED.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a Division work control point-of-contact (POC) delegate for research safety summaries (RSS), documentation for hazard identification and control. In so doing, coordinates the RSS reviews to ensure sufficient peer and Subject Matter Expert (SME) review and to ensure all RSSs are approved and authorized within the proper timeframe.
  • Coordinate with the Division Training Officer and assigned Qualified Health and Safety Professional(s) to determine RSS training requirements and ensure associated training matrices are updated/maintained, as needed.
  • Participate as part of an integrated team in lab and facility walkthroughs to assist ISED Lab Space Managers and staff with maintaining safe and compliant work spaces.
  • Assist with maintenance of the ISED Research and Operations Support SharePoint and PowerBI for tracking and trending low level ESH&Q observations/issues.
  • Assist with the implementation of Integrated Safety Management (ISM) into the work planning and execution process as part of an interdisciplinary operations team.  Abide by and promote the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research principles including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations, raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task and where learning never stops.
  • Continually seek ways to increase operational efficiencies and improve safety culture in support of the research mission and champion initiatives to do so.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A High School diploma and five years of administrative and project management experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Associate’s  degree in a science or operational discipline or relevant technical field (e.g. health and safety, industrial hygiene, environmental management, project management, engineering, operations, etc.) or an equivalent level of education and experience.
  • 1- 5 years of experience in occupational safety, engineering discipline, ES&H, project management or industrial hygiene activities
  • Experience working as a team player  in a multi-disciplinary R&D environment or supporting industrial, radiological, nuclear or secure facilities and operations.
  • Knowledge and background in chemical/material identification and evaluation along with experience in hazard analysis and exposure assessment activities.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with work control processes in a research and development environment and/or industrial environment.
  • Ability to work under the guidance/supervision of technical staff on the integrated team to provide exceptional support to ISED.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to meet inflexible deadlines on own initiative.
  • Experience in the DOE system and ORNL systems such as the Research Hazard Analysis and Control System and/or Work Planning System, Integrated Safety Management,  and the Hazardous Material Management Information System.
