Research Specialist (varying levels), Schulman Lab

The Schulman Lab in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Specialist, Research Specialist Intermediate, or Research Specialist Senior to assist investigators with experiments examining the regulation of transcription by members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily and exploring links between lipid metabolism and inflammation in several model systems.

The individual will conduct daily experimental procedures and must be able to master techniques in molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry. The individual will conduct complex research activities and make decisions according to ethical standards, understand laboratory processes and procedures, and perform data analysis.

The incumbent will participate in formulating research methods, suggest options for improving quality, and recommend solutions. They will also oversee the day-to-day operation of projects, confer with PI in developing plans for research projects, discuss the interpretation of results, and help prepare scientific manuscripts for publication.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Experimental Work:

  • Work with mice.
  • Isolate RNA and primary cells.
  • Quantify gene expression by QPCR.
  • Perform flow cytometry experiments.
  • Participate in formulating research methods.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of projects.
  • Discuss and interpret results.

Laboratory Maintenance and General Duties:

  • Maintain a clean laboratory area and assist with overall laboratory maintenance.
  • Make buffers and other reagents.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook.
  • Be available to assist principal investigators as needed.

Ordering and Purchasing:

  • Process purchases for the lab using the UVA Marketplace.
  • Interact with vendors to determine appropriate products.
  • Return damaged or incorrect items.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
 

Research Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree in related field.

Research Specialist Intermediate:
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience. Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Research Specialist Senior:
Education: Master's or terminal degree
Experience: Five years of specialized experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently.
  • Knowledge of general lab procedures, basic safety precautions, and lab equipment.
  • laboratory experience in an academic or industrial laboratory setting.
  • Experience working with rodents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. Position requires working with laboratory equipment and frequent movement around the laboratory.
