Position Summary
This position is designed for an experienced Research Specialist at the Journey level in the Marsico Lung Institute, a dynamic laboratory environment at the frontier of pulmonary research. This position is located in the Molecular Biology and Animal Models Cores, under the direction of Dr. Wanda O’Neal. The purpose of the Molecular Biology and Animal Models Cores is to provide specialized expertise in in vitro and in vivo experimentation focused on organ, cellular and molecular phenotypes associated with obstructive and restrictive pulmonary diseases. The primary purpose of the position is to provide qualified, long-term support to the integrated operations of the Molecular Biology and Animal Models Cores and its collaborating scientists with four major functions: 
1) Experimental performance: The Research Specialist will independently conduct specific, investigator-requested studies involving human or animal tissues, primary cells, or cell lines for grants and contracts and to support research publication. This includes but is not limited to: protocol development and performance of single cell or single nuclei RNA/ATAC sequencing or other multi-ome approaches (i.e., spatial transcriptomic and proteomic, Hi-plex immunohistochemistry), preparation of ex vivo precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) or explant cultures from human and mouse lungs, cell culture of human or mouse primary airway, alveolar and endothelial cells, basic biochemistry, immunohistochemistry/cytochemistry, mouse colony management, in vivo delivery of experimental challenges (e.g., bacteria, viruses, or allergens), survival and non-survival surgeries, respiratory phenotyping (bronchoalveolar lavage, tissue harvest, preparation of samples for cytological, histological, microbiological, biochemical, immunological, and rheological analyses). 
2) Data management: Analysis, quality control, and presentation for lab meetings, team meetings, grants, and publications. 
3) Laboratory management: Independent management of lab operations including supplies procurement, instrumentation maintenance, samples archival (both electronic and physical), training and supervision of coworkers and students. 
4) Regulatory compliance: This includes maintaining EHS, OACU, IRB, and DCM compliance by generating and updating protocols and procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The Research Specialist must be willing to work with human tissues and laboratory mice and be able to work with biological safety level 2 (BSL2) environments. In addition, the successful candidate must possess the following: 
* Demonstrated abilities in cell biology and rodent dissection
* Effective communication skills 
* Willingness to follow established protocols and lab safety procedures
* Proficiency in using database management and statistical software
* Diligence in the maintenance of laboratory records
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
* At least 2 years of experience in a laboratory performing research using both in vitro and in vivo models
* Master’s degree in physiology, biology, pathology, or a related discipline
* Familiarity with data analysis software (GraphPad Prism, SAS) and ability to query scientific literature web-based resources (PubMed)
