Position Summary
The UNC Neuroscience Center is seeking a full-time research specialist to assist in daily operations of the UNC Neuroscience Microscopy Core facility. The UNC Neuroscience Microscopy Core provides support for UNC faculty and student research with seven microscopes, a cryostat, and three state-of-the-art analysis workstations. We are seeking a dedicated person passionate about microscopy and helping life sciences researchers get the most out of today’s innovative microscopes. This position will be responsible for providing support to the users of the Core, ensuring data generated from the Core is appropriately stored and accessible to customers, performing preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment, and utilizing and managing scheduling, reporting and invoicing software. In addition, this position will also be responsible for routine day to day laboratory upkeep duties such as ordering supplies and disposing of hazardous waste. The candidate should have strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; both written and verbal; independent critical thinking and problem solving ability; flexibility; and excellent attention to detail. Experience in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment and the ability to work independently is desired. Previous imaging/confocal knowledge and hands-on experience with routine and advanced multi-color experiments is desirable. Experience with one-on-one teaching or training people from a variety of backgrounds and levels of expertise is preferred. Familiarity with utilizing or customizing Linux or Python programming for image analysis is desired. Any experience with iLab administration software, Canva illustration software and Wix/Wordpress website building is also desirable. This position reports to the Core Director.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Consistently strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in neuroscience, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field is preferred. Previous imaging/confocal knowledge and hands-on experience with routine and advanced multi-color experiments is desirable. Previous programming experience (e.g. Python and experience with Linux environments, cloud computing clusters), and biological programming expertise (e.g. Fiji/ImageJ, Cell Profiler, sci-kit-image). Work experience in a laboratory environment is preferred. Experience with one-on-one teaching or training people from a variety of backgrounds and levels of expertise is preferred. Any experience with iLab administration software and Wix/Wordpress website building or Canva illustration-making is also desirable. Experience in a fast-paced, multitasking environment and the ability to work independently is preferred. Previous experience with general accounting and optimizing business operations is preferred.
