About the Department
 

Our major research focus is understanding the biology and therapeutic vulnerabilities of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer. We investigate the mechanisms of ER+ breast cancer prevention, progression, metastasis, and response to experimental therapies using cell based and in vivo breast cancer models, some of which are derived directly from patients. Additional interests included generating and testing organoid cultures derived from breast tumor tissue. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary
 

The Research Specialist will assist the staff in a laboratory setting to perform research experiments and help with different laboratory functions – organizing storage, maintaining equipment, performing research experiments individually and within a team setting, and following up on ongoing research.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains tissue culture cell lines.

  • Maintains mouse colonies.

  • Performs biochemical and molecular biology techniques to generate reliable data.

  • Prepares tissue and tumor specimens and samples.

  • Carries out routine tasks and experiments independently.

  • Keeps good records of each experiment performed.

  • Analyzes and interprets results for presentations and publications.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

 

Education:

  •  Bachelor’s degree with a major in biological or biophysical sciences.

 

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of full-time laboratory experience in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or biotechnology.

  • Ability to work with mice.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to work under sterile conditions.

  • Knowledge of basic biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.

  • Ability to learn new techniques quickly and to work independently.

  • Time management and organizational skills.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability and willingness to work with mice.

  • Ability and willingness to work evening hours and weekends, when necessary to support research activities.
