Position Overview
The Research Specialist position under the supervision of Dr. Allison Hyngstrom, conducts experiments and manages laboratory activities involving human participants that are central to multiple National Institutes of Health grants investigating ischemic conditioning and improved motor function post stroke. This position oversees all research activities including participant recruitment, screening, and scheduling, exercise training studies and data collection and analyses, and manages regulatory research documents and general laboratory operations. In addition to data collection and management, is expected to make intellectual contributions to experimental design, development of grant proposals, and preparation of manuscripts. It is integral the position manages lab efforts to successfully complete multiple long-term and short-term research projects through the effective and efficient management of technicians, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students within the lab.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Manage and coordinate scientific research studies on the mechanisms of motor performance, cardiovascular intervention, and exercise-training in people with chronic stroke by organizing research participant recruitment, screening, and scheduling, and aiding with assessments of their physical function, and collection of questionnaire and activity data.
2. Lead and assist with all experimental studies and exercise training, perform statistical analyses of data, operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and maintain laboratory supplies
3. Supervise all student researchers, standard operation procedures and safety protocols including maintenance of human subjects research regulatory documentation and compliance per federal, state, and university requirements. Hire and fire student and research staff.
4. Assist Dr. Hyngstrom, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in the development of grants and writing/preparation of manuscripts. Disseminate to the research community and public experimental findings by attending domestic and international scientific conferences in the form of a poster or presentation.
5. Oversee day to day laboratory expenses and assist with budgetary responsibilities.
6. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A master’s degree in Exercise Physiology/Science, Kinesiology, Human Movement, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation.
A minimum of three years of related work.
Experience and working knowledge of measurement and analysis of torque, electromyography, electrocardiography, and exercise training in people with stroke.
Experience using and writing MATLAB scripts.
Experience writing and amending regulatory research documents, specifically IRB protocol and informed consent forms.
Experience recruiting, screening, and scheduling human research participants.
Experience writing/editing research posters, abstracts, and manuscripts.
Experience managing and training students in exercise and rehabilitation research.
Proficiency in neural, muscular, and cardiovascular physiology.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Supervisory experience preferred.
Experience with exercise/rehabilitation with people with various neural and/or muscular conditions.
Experience designing and developing new research studies involving human participants.
Experience coordinating laboratory communications and events.
Experience teaching exercise and rehabilitation and/or human physiology at a college level.
